Why most self-taught engineers quit at week 3 (and how to not be one of them)
I've watched a lot of people try to teach themselves robotics, cybersecurity, or mechanical engineering online. Most quit around week 3. Not because it's too hard — because of one specific mistake: they start with theory instead of a build.
Here's what actually works:
1. Pick one tiny, ugly project before you know anything.
Not "learn Python," not "understand circuits." Pick something dumb and concrete: an obstacle-avoiding cart, a script that finds open ports on your home network, a hinge mechanism that doesn't wobble. The project forces you to learn exactly what you need, in order, with immediate feedback.
2. Use the engineering loop, every time: define the problem → research constraints → prototype → test → iterate. Skipping straight to "research" (YouTube binging, course hoarding) is where most people get stuck and lose momentum.
3. Get outside feedback weekly. Self-taught engineers plateau because they don't know what they don't know. A second set of eyes — even a peer at your level — catches blind spots fast.
4. Treat career-pivot STEM like a part-time job, not a hobby you'll get to eventually. Block 5-6 hours a week, same time slots. Consistency beats intensity every time here.
