Your hobby & Your FUN!
I've been working with clay for years, and I see the same mistakes from every single beginner. Here's how to skip the frustration:
1. Not wedging enough. If there's air in your clay, it'll crack or explode in the kiln. Wedge for at least 3-5 minutes. Yes, your arms will hurt. That's the price of admission.
2. Fighting the wheel instead of guiding it. Centering isn't about force ā it's about steady, consistent pressure. Lock your elbows into your body and let the wheel do the work.
3. Pulling walls too thin, too fast. Slow down. One even pull is worth more than three rushed ones. If your piece starts wobbling, stop and re-center before it collapses.
4. Skipping the drying process. Bone-dry means bone-dry. If you rush to the kiln with even slightly damp clay, you'll get cracks or worse. Patience here saves pieces.
5. Using the wrong glaze consistency. Glaze should feel like heavy cream, not water. Dip test tiles first. Nobody wants to open a kiln to a melted disaster.
If you're just starting out and want step-by-step guides, technique breakdowns, and glaze recipes ā I put everything into the Clay & Craft Starter Kit. It's built for complete beginners.
