The Three-Way Split Rule That Stopped My Tax Panic
Every freelancer knows the feeling. Money lands in your account and you think "I'll figure out taxes later." Then quarter end arrives and you're scrambling.
I used to do this every single quarter. The payment came in, I spent what I needed, and by the time taxes were due I was calculating backwards from an empty balance trying to figure out what I owed.
Here's what fixed it — a dead-simple rule I now apply to every single incoming payment:
The Three-Way Split
The moment a client payment clears, I split it three ways before I touch a cent:
Tax reserve — my estimated tax rate × the payment, moved to a separate place immediately
Operating costs — the fixed amount I need for tools, software, subscriptions
Spendable income — what's actually left for me
That's it. No spreadsheet gymnastics. No guessing. No "I'll sort it out at quarter end."
The key insight: tax money was never yours to begin with. If you treat it as available cash, you're spending someone else's money. The split rule makes that real in 30 seconds.
I then tag each payment with a traffic light status:
🟢 Green — split done, tax money set aside
🟡 Amber — partially split, needs review
🔴 Red — not split yet, danger zone
By the time quarter end rolls around, I know my exact tax number at least 7 days before the deadline. No panic. No scrambling. Just a clean transfer.
If this sounds like the system you need, I built a full step-by-step eBook around it — covering the split rule, a deadline map, a simple money ledger, and quarter-end checkpoint reviews. It's called The Quarterly Split System and it's available right here.
Stop mixing your money. Start splitting it.
