The cold outreach mistake that kills 90% of freelancers

Most freelancers send outreach that sounds like this:

"Hi, I'm a freelancer who does X. I'd love to work with you. Let me know if you're interested!"

That message gets ignored every single time. Here's why — and what to do instead.

The problem isn't your service. It's your approach.

When you lead with "I do X," you're making the conversation about you. The business doesn't care about you yet. They care about their problems.

What actually works:

  1. Lead with observation. "I noticed your landing page doesn't have a clear CTA above the fold" — this shows you actually looked at their business.

  1. Make it specific. Generic messages get generic results (deleted). Reference something real — a recent post, their website, a product they launched.

  1. Keep it short. 3-4 sentences max. Nobody reads essays from strangers.

  1. Don't pitch on the first message. Start a conversation. The sale comes later.

I've used this approach to start conversations with hundreds of businesses. It's not magic — it's just being a real human instead of a spam bot.

If you want the full system — lead sourcing, email frameworks, DM templates, follow-up sequences — it's all inside the Client Outreach System.
