Welcome to CloudCostPro — Start Here

Welcome to CloudCostPro. You just made an investment that will pay for itself within your first week of applying what you learn.

How This Course Works

The Cloud Cost Optimization Masterclass is structured as a 5-chapter journey:

  1. Foundations — Understand why cloud waste happens and set up your cost visibility stack

  2. Compute Optimization — Rightsizing, reserved instances, spot instances, and auto-scaling

  3. Storage & Data Transfer — The silent budget killers most teams ignore

  4. Architecture Patterns — Containers, serverless, and right-fit design

  5. FinOps & Automation — Build a repeatable system that keeps costs low permanently

Lessons are sequential — complete them in order. Each lesson ends with concrete action items you should execute in your own environment.

Getting the Most Out of This

  • Apply as you learn. Don't just read — run the commands, pull the reports, make the changes in your cloud accounts.

  • Track your savings. Before starting the course, screenshot your current monthly cloud bill. You'll compare at the end.

  • Use the community chat. Post your wins, ask questions, share what worked.

  • Aim for 1 chapter per week. The course is designed for working engineers. 2-3 hours per week is enough.

Quick Win Before You Start

Go to your cloud console right now and check for unattached EBS volumes (AWS), unattached persistent disks (GCP), or unmanaged disks (Azure). Delete them. That's free money back in your pocket in the next 5 minutes.

Let's get to work.

5 Cloud Cost Mistakes That Are Costing You $10K+/Month

I've spent years as an SRE optimizing cloud infrastructure for companies running $50K-$500K/month in cloud spend. These are the five most expensive mistakes I see repeatedly — and they're all fixable within a week.

1. Running Dev/Staging Environments 24/7

Your developers work ~10 hours a day, 5 days a week. That's 50 out of 168 hours — meaning dev environments sit idle 70% of the time.

The fix: Schedule dev/staging to shut down outside business hours. A simple cron job or Lambda function can start instances at 8 AM and stop them at 7 PM.

Typical savings: 65-70% of your dev/staging compute bill.

2. No Storage Lifecycle Policies

S3 Standard costs $0.023/GB/month. S3 Glacier Deep Archive costs $0.00099/GB/month — that's 23x cheaper. Yet most organizations store everything on Standard forever.

The fix: Set a lifecycle policy on every bucket: move to Infrequent Access after 30 days, Glacier after 90 days, Deep Archive after 365 days. Delete incomplete multipart uploads after 7 days.

Typical savings: 40-60% of storage costs.

3. Oversized Database Instances

I've audited hundreds of RDS instances. The average CPU utilization? 12%. Teams pick db.r5.4xlarge "to be safe" when a db.r5.xlarge would handle the load with room to spare.

The fix: Check your database CPU and memory utilization over the last 30 days. If average CPU is under 30% and memory buffer pool hit rate is above 95%, you can safely downsize.

Typical savings: 50-75% per oversized instance.

4. Ignoring Data Transfer Costs

Cross-AZ traffic costs $0.01/GB each direction. NAT Gateways charge $0.045/GB processed. These line items are small individually but massive at scale.

The fix: Use S3 Gateway Endpoints (free) instead of routing S3 traffic through NAT. Use VPC Interface Endpoints for other AWS services. Place tightly-coupled services in the same AZ.

Typical savings: $500-$5,000/month depending on traffic volume.

5. Zero Commitment Coverage

On-demand pricing is the most expensive way to run cloud infrastructure. Reserved Instances and Savings Plans offer 30-72% discounts for workloads you know you'll run.

The fix: Analyze your last 3 months of compute usage. Identify the baseline that runs 24/7. Cover 60-70% of that baseline with 1-year Savings Plans (no upfront for lower risk).

Typical savings: 30-40% of your committed compute spend.

These five changes alone typically reduce total cloud bills by 30-50%. No architectural changes needed — just better operational hygiene.

I teach the complete framework — from quick wins to advanced architecture optimization — in my Cloud Cost Optimization Masterclass here on CloudCostPro. If your team is spending more than $20K/month on cloud, the course pays for itself on Day 1.
