After studying dozens of co-parenting families, these are the patterns that destroy children's wellbeing — and the fixes are simpler than you'd think.
1. Using kids as messengers
"Tell your dad he needs to pay." Your child isn't a carrier pigeon. Use a co-parenting app or email. Keep kids out of logistics entirely.
2. Competing on holidays and birthdays
Two massive birthday parties. Guilt trips about Christmas. Your kid doesn't want a competition — they want to see both parents smile. Alternate years or host separate celebrations without drama.
3. Interrogating after the other parent's time
"What did Mommy do? Who was there?" This teaches your child they're a surveillance tool. Instead: "Did you have a good time?" and move on.
4. Badmouthing in earshot
Even whispered phone calls. Even the eye roll. Kids pick up everything. When you attack the other parent, the child internalizes it as an attack on half of themselves.
5. Forgetting to take care of yourself
You can't pour from an empty cup. Therapy, exercise, sleep, friendships — these aren't luxuries. Your calm is your child's anchor.
