5 Ground Rules That Make Co-Parenting Actually Work
Co-parenting after divorce doesn't have to feel like a battlefield. After coaching hundreds of parents through this transition, here are the 5 non-negotiable rules that separate families who thrive from those who stay stuck:
1. Keep the Kids Out of the Middle
Never use your child as a messenger, spy, or therapist. If you have something to say to your co-parent, say it directly — through text, email, or a co-parenting app. Your child's only job is to be a kid.
2. Consistency Beats Perfection
Bedtimes, homework rules, screen time — they don't have to be identical at both homes. But the closer you can get, the less stress your kids carry between transitions. Start with the 3 biggest routines and align there first.
3. Communicate Like Coworkers, Not Ex-Partners
Keep it brief, informative, and focused on the kids. The BIFF method works: Brief, Informative, Friendly, Firm. Save the emotional processing for your therapist or support group — not the co-parent text thread.
4. Build a Transition Ritual
The handoff between homes is the hardest moment for kids. Create a small ritual — a special snack, a 10-minute check-in, a favorite song in the car. It signals safety and predictability during the most uncertain part of their week.
5. Your Healing Is Their Stability
The single best thing you can do for your kids is work on yourself. When you're regulated, they're regulated. Therapy, community, coaching — invest in your own healing and watch how it transforms your co-parenting.
