Lumen is a Mac cinema player for MKV remuxes. It finds the folders that hold your films — external drives included — and plays them as they were mastered. $2.99 once. No account, no subscription, no conversion.
PICTURE
• Hardware decode (VideoToolbox, zero-copy) into a 16-bit float pipeline
• EWA Lanczos upscaling and Mitchell downscaling in linear light
• HDR10 and Dolby Vision use the file’s metadata peak, not a per-scene measurement. The built-in display passes the file through; a TV over HDMI gets the signal untouched
• 24p stays 24p: an external display switches to a multiple of the film’s frame rate and switches back when you’re done
• IMAX 1.43 and 1.90 shown at their native aspect. Nothing is cropped
SOUND
• HDMI takes the device exclusively. AC3 and DTS bitstream; TrueHD and DTS-HD decode to lossless 7.1 LPCM at 24-bit
• Forced subtitles appear only when the audio already matches your language
LIBRARY
• Finds your films on every drive and watches for the disk you plug in
• Stills from a mid-film keyframe of the file itself; posters from a sidecar next to it or a title match
• Resume, Continue Watching, search by title, year or format (“Atmos”)
• Press I during playback for the stats plate: decoder, cadence, dropped frames, colour, sound. Every number comes from the engine
Built on libmpv (MPVKit). Apple silicon, macOS 14 or newer. MKV, MP4, MOV.
