3 Things I Wish Someone Told Me When I First Got Here

Moving to a new country is one of the hardest things you'll ever do. And when you're Haitian, there's a whole extra layer — the culture shock, the paperwork, the loneliness of not having your people around.

I've been through it. Here are 3 things I wish someone told me on day one:

1. Your first job doesn't define you. A lot of us take whatever work we can get when we arrive. That's survival, not failure. The goal is stability first, then you build from there.

2. Ask for help — in the right places. There are Haitian organizations, legal clinics, and community groups that exist specifically to help people in transition. Most people don't know they exist. We share these resources inside our community every week.

3. Find your people. Isolation makes everything harder. When you have a community that understands your language, your food, your humor, your struggles — everything gets a little more manageable.

That's why I built Nou Pa Pou Kont Nou — a space where Haitians help Haitians. Career resources, housing leads, legal info, and most importantly, real connection.

You don't have to figure it out alone. 🇭🇹
