A research note should let another reader retrace the evidence.

For each important company claim, record:

• Source: the original filing and page.

• Context: the period, currency, and units.

• Calculation: the definition, inputs, and arithmetic.

Separate the reported fact from your interpretation and record what remains uncertain. Before closing a note, check whether its strongest claim can be reproduced from the source.

Compare profit with the cash the business generated.

Fictional example, all figures in $000:

• Net income: 100.

• Operating cash flow: 80 after non-cash and working-capital adjustments.

• Equipment spending: 30, leaving 50 under “operating cash flow minus capex.”

The useful question is why earnings and operating cash flow differ. Review the same reporting period and trace the gap through non-cash items and changes in working capital.
