The Only 3 Things a Beginner Actually Needs to Start Playing Tennis

Every beginner overthinks their first tennis purchase. They read 47 reviews, watch YouTube comparisons, and end up more confused than when they started.

Here's the truth: you need exactly 3 things.

1. A lightweight racket (under 11 oz)

Forget the pro-level frames. As a beginner, you want something forgiving with a large sweet spot. Heavier rackets = more arm fatigue = less fun. Keep it light.

2. Practice balls, not premium balls

Pressureless or low-compression balls bounce more predictably and last longer. Don't buy the $8 cans of Pro Penn until you're actually rallying consistently.

3. A bag that fits everything

Doesn't need to hold 6 rackets. Just needs to carry your racket, balls, water bottle, and a towel. A simple duffle works.

That's it. No fancy shoes required yet (any flat court shoes work). No overgrips, dampeners, or string tension debates.

Just grab the basics and get on the court. The best way to figure out what you actually need is to play.

We put together a Complete Starter Kit with all three — racket, balls, and bag — for $89. Built specifically for people picking up the sport for the first time.
