The headline formula that landed me my first $2,000 client

Most people overcomplicate copywriting. They think you need to be "creative" or have some natural talent for writing.

You don't.

Here's the formula I used to write the headline that landed my first real paying client:

How to [achieve desired outcome] without [biggest fear]

That's it. Dead simple.

The client was a fitness coach who needed a landing page. His old headline was: "Premium Online Fitness Coaching." Generic. Boring. Zero emotion.

I changed it to: "How to lose 20 lbs in 90 days without giving up the foods you love."

His conversion rate went from 2.1% to 8.7%. He paid me $2,000 and came back for 3 more projects.

Why does this formula work?

  1. "How to" — promises a clear outcome

  2. Specific result — "20 lbs in 90 days" is measurable

  3. Removes the objection — "without giving up foods" kills the #1 fear

If you want to learn more frameworks like this, I'm teaching a full copywriting course inside Alex CopyLab. We cover headlines, sales pages, email copy, and the psychology behind why people buy.

Use code LAUNCH for 25% off your first 3 months.

3 Meta Ad Mistakes Killing Your E-Commerce ROAS

Most e-commerce brands burning through ad spend are making the same 3 mistakes. I've managed campaigns across dozens of stores and these come up over and over.

1. Broad targeting with no exclusions.

You're paying to show ads to people who already bought, people who bounced in 2 seconds, and people who will never convert. Set up proper exclusion audiences — past purchasers, low-quality traffic, and existing customers should be filtered out of prospecting campaigns.

2. Testing too many creatives at once with too little budget.

If you're running 10 ad sets at $10/day each, none of them have enough data to optimize. Pick 3-4 strong creatives, give them real budget ($30-50/day minimum per ad set), and let the algorithm do its job for at least 5-7 days before killing anything.

3. Ignoring post-click experience.

Your ad can have a 5% CTR and still lose money if the landing page doesn't convert. Make sure your landing page matches the ad's promise exactly — same offer, same imagery, same tone. Disconnect = wasted spend.

Fix these three and you'll see your ROAS improve within the first week.

I run Meta & Instagram ads for e-commerce brands full-time. If you want help scaling profitably, apply through the Meta Ads Management product on my page.

The 3 copywriting mistakes that cost freelancers $10K+ per year

After reviewing hundreds of freelance copywriter portfolios, I keep seeing the same three mistakes killing their income.

Mistake #1: Writing features, not transformations.

Most freelance copy reads like a spec sheet. "We offer 24/7 support, a 30-day guarantee, and premium materials." Cool — nobody cares. Buyers want to know how their life changes. Every feature needs a "which means..." after it.

"24/7 support — which means you'll never be stuck waiting for answers while your launch deadline creeps closer."

That's copy that converts.

Mistake #2: Burying the hook.

Your first line is the most valuable real estate in any piece of copy. If you're starting with "Welcome to..." or "At [Company], we believe..." you've already lost them. Lead with the pain, the desire, or a pattern interrupt. Earn the next sentence.

Mistake #3: No clear next step.

Vague CTAs like "Learn More" or "Get Started" create friction. Tell them exactly what happens when they click, and make it feel inevitable.

"Get your free teardown in 60 seconds" > "Learn More"

I break down frameworks like this every week inside CopyLab — real examples, templates you can steal, and the psychology behind what makes great copy tick.

If you're a freelance copywriter who wants to command higher rates, this is built for you.
