The 5-minute rule when an argument starts heating up

When a conversation about money, chores, or family starts to heat up, try this before anyone shuts down.

The 5-minute rule: either of you can call a 5-minute pause. No winning the last word. No walking out for the night. You both step away, then come back.

Use the pause on purpose. Sit somewhere quiet and ask yourselves:

  1. What was I actually trying to protect just now? (time, fairness, respect, feeling heard)

  2. What did I hear my partner say, vs. what I assumed they meant?

  3. If we came back in 5 minutes as a team, what is the smallest next decision we could make?

When you return, each person gets one uninterrupted minute. Then pick one small next step, not the whole problem.

If you try this this week, come back and tell us what happened. What did you notice in yourself during the pause? What was harder, calling the pause or coming back?

You are welcome here even if the first try was messy. That is how couples actually learn this.
