The 3 mistakes home bartenders make (and how to fix them)

I've watched a lot of people make cocktails at home. The mistakes are almost always the same three things.

1. Too much ice, not enough dilution control

Ice isn't just for chilling — it dilutes your drink. A stirred cocktail like a Negroni needs about 30 seconds of stirring to hit the right dilution. Most people either under-stir (too boozy, not smooth) or let it sit too long (watery). Time it.

2. Skipping the garnish

A garnish isn't decoration. An orange peel expressed over a cocktail adds aroma you literally can't get any other way. The oils from citrus peel change how your drink smells — and smell is 80% of taste. Don't skip it.

3. Using cheap vermouth

If you're making Manhattans or Martinis and wondering why they taste flat, it's the vermouth. Vermouth oxidizes fast after opening. Keep it in the fridge, use it within 3-4 weeks, and buy a decent bottle. This one fix will transform your stirred drinks.

None of this is complicated — it's just knowing what to pay attention to.
