The two-week draft that actually gets finished

Most students do not fail a major paper because they cannot write. They fail it because week one disappears into "I'll start when I understand it," and week two becomes a panic outline at 1 a.m.

Here is the process I wish I had been given.

Day 1 is not writing. It is decoding.

Copy the prompt and the rubric into one note. Underline the verb (analyze, argue, compare, evaluate). Circle the object of that verb. Then write one sentence: this paper must [verb] [object] for [this class] at [this length]. That sentence is the filter for every paragraph later. If a source or a section cannot survive that sentence, it does not belong.

Days 2–3: a small research map, not a pile of PDFs.

Eight to twelve candidate sources. Course readings first. For each one, a single row: thesis, one usable finding, how it serves your assignment sentence, keep or drop. Cluster the keepers into three to five claims. Those clusters are your body sections.

Days 4–8: outline as claims, then a messy complete draft.

A heading like "Background" is not a section. "This theory cannot explain the case without X" is a section. Draft the body first. Introduction last. Four hundred words a day is a floor, not a mood.

Days 9–14: three passes, not endless tinkering.

  1. Evidence: claim, evidence, warrant in every paragraph.

  2. Citations in the style the prompt named, built as you go.

  3. Voice: cut throat-clearing, read it out loud once, run the admin checklist (length, name, file, upload).

The point is a complete, credible draft you can still revise, take to a writing center, or hand to an instructor. Not a perfect first page. Not someone else's paper.
