The real reason your crochet looks lumpy (it's not your stitches)

If your rows are wavy, your edges curl, or your stitches look inconsistent in size — before you blame the pattern or your hook, check your tension.

Tension is how tightly you hold the working yarn as it feeds through your fingers. Most beginners grip too tight (stiff, hard-to-work stitches, curling fabric) or too loose (sloppy, uneven rows). Neither is 'wrong' — the goal is consistency, not tightness or looseness.

A simple fix: wrap the yarn around your pinky or weave it through two fingers so it has consistent friction as it moves, instead of just pinching it between finger and thumb. Then practice chains of 20-30 stitches, stopping to check if each one looks the same size as the last. If you find yourself instinctively re-tightening halfway through a row, that's the habit to break.

This one adjustment fixes 90% of "why does my project look messy" frustration — more than switching hook sizes or yarn weight ever will.
