Why most indie films waste money on animation
Most filmmakers I talk to wait until post-production to think about animation and VFX. By then, half their budget is gone and they're scrambling.
The fix is dead simple: plan your animated sequences before you shoot.
Here's what that looks like in practice:
Storyboard the animation first. Even rough sketches help your DP frame shots that'll composite cleanly
Lock your color palette early. Animation that clashes with your live-action grade looks amateur instantly
Budget 2-3 revision rounds. First pass is never final. If you only budget for one, you'll either go over or ship something half-baked
Send reference frames, not just descriptions. "I want it to feel like Spiderverse" tells me nothing. A screenshot of the exact frame you mean tells me everything
I've animated for short films, music videos, and branded content. The projects that go smoothest are always the ones where the filmmaker treats animation as part of the production, not an afterthought.
