Why dad jokes actually work (a short defense of bad puns)
Unpopular opinion: dad jokes are the highest form of comedy, and I will die on this hill.
Here's the thing nobody tells you about being a dad — the jokes aren't really about being funny. They're about the reaction. The eye roll, the groan, the "that was so bad" from your kid. That's the whole point. You're not trying to land a laugh, you're trying to land a moment. A little recurring bit that's just yours.
The problem is supply. Everyone's got the same 5 jokes memorized from childhood ("I'm hungry" / "Hi Hungry, I'm Dad") and they run dry fast. Kids clock repeats immediately and call you out for it.
So I started keeping a running list — one new joke a day, nothing recycled, family-friendly enough to use anywhere. Turned it into a small daily drop called Dadbank if anyone wants a steady supply instead of googling "dad jokes" at 7am before school drop-off like the rest of us used to.
Either way — keep telling the bad jokes. The groans are the point.
