Daily Tip: Boring cuts kill retention, not boring content
A clip can have a great hook and still lose viewers by second 10 — usually because the pacing goes flat right after the hook lands.
Retention is less about what is being said and more about how often something changes on screen. A few pacing habits worth building:
Cut on dead air. Pauses, "um"s, and repeated words that work fine in long-form footage drag hard in a 30-second clip. Trim them tight.
Vary shot length. Wall-to-wall same-length cuts feel monotonous even if the content is interesting. Let a strong line breathe slightly longer, then snap back to quick cuts.
Reset attention with visuals. A zoom, a caption change, or a b-roll cutaway every few seconds gives the eye something new without changing the story.
Watch your clip back and note every point your attention drifts — that's where the cut, not the content, needs work.
