5 Things I Wish Every Adult Knew Before Their First Ballet Class
After 15 years of teaching ballet to adults, I've seen the same fears and misconceptions hold people back. Here's what I always tell my new students:
1. Flexibility is earned, not required.
You don't need to touch your toes to start. Ballet builds flexibility over time. Every professional dancer started stiff somewhere.
2. Ballet is the hardest workout you'll ever love.
It looks effortless on stage because dancers have trained their bodies for years. Your first plié will humble you — and that's the point.
3. Your body type doesn't matter.
Classical ballet was built around a specific aesthetic. Modern ballet training is not. Strong bodies come in every shape, and your body will adapt in ways that surprise you.
4. It's a mental reset, not just a physical one.
My students — lawyers, surgeons, executives — all say the same thing: "It's the one hour where my brain fully shuts off." The focus required to coordinate your body in ballet leaves no room for work stress.
5. You'll progress faster than you think.
Adults learn differently than children. You bring discipline, body awareness, and intentionality. Most of my students are doing things in month two that took them far longer to learn as kids.
If you've been thinking about trying ballet, stop thinking and start moving.
