The books do not start at tax season

Most first-time founders do not have a bookkeeping problem. They have a delay problem.

They mix personal and business money for eight months. Receipts live in a camera roll. Invoices are “in my head.” Then March arrives and they pay someone to reconstruct a year from screenshots.

That reconstruction is the expensive part. The actual system is small:

  1. A cash book — money in, money out, same day.

  2. A sales list — billed, collected, still outstanding.

  3. An expense folder named by month, with proof.

  4. A weekly pass where the bank and the book have to agree.

  5. Four numbers at month-end: in, out, owed to you, owed by you.

  6. A pack you can hand an accountant without a 40-minute call.

You do not need software for that. You need ten minutes and a refusal to skip days.

If the business is already open and the book is empty, start with the last seven days. Not last year. Seven days. Then do not miss tomorrow.

That is the whole method. The rest is practice.
