The 3 Things Solar Installers Get Wrong When Sourcing Equipment

After years in solar distribution, I see the same mistakes from installers over and over. Here's what separates the crews making real margins from the ones barely breaking even:

1. Buying panels on price alone. The cheapest panel per watt is almost never the best deal. Degradation rates, warranty terms, and bankability matter more than saving $0.02/W. A Tier-1 panel that holds 90% output at year 25 will always beat a no-name brand that dies at year 8.

2. Not locking in pricing before bidding jobs. If you're quoting customers based on last month's pricing, you're gambling. Equipment costs shift weekly. Lock your pricing with your distributor BEFORE you send that proposal. One bad quote can wipe out your margin on a 10kW residential install.

3. Ignoring logistics lead times. The number of installers who close a deal, then scramble to source equipment in 2 weeks is wild. Build relationships with distributors who can guarantee stock and delivery windows. Your reputation depends on hitting install dates.

We built SunVolt Supply specifically for installers and contractors who want reliable wholesale pricing, real inventory (not dropship delays), and a direct line to someone who actually understands solar BOS.
