I've coached hundreds of students through DELF and DALF prep. The ones who fail almost always make the same mistakes — and none of them are about grammar.

1. They study vocabulary lists instead of practicing production. The B2 exam tests your ability to argue a position, not recite definitions. If you can't spontaneously debate whether nuclear energy is good for France, vocab flashcards won't save you.

2. They skip the "compréhension orale" until the last week. Listening comprehension is the hardest section to improve quickly. You need months of exposure to native-speed French — podcasts, news, interviews. Start now.

3. They write like they speak. Written French and spoken French are different registers. The examiners expect formal connectors (néanmoins, en revanche, force est de constater que...). Practice them until they feel natural.

4. They don't time themselves. Every section is timed. Students who practice without a timer consistently run out of time on exam day. Simulate real conditions at least twice a week.

5. They study alone. The oral production section requires you to debate. You physically cannot practice this alone. You need a partner or a coach who will challenge your arguments in real time.
