The 3 Patterns
1. The Convergence Point
Where two or more decommissioned roads intersect an active highway within a 0.5-mile radius. These convergence points account for roughly 40% of documented encounter zones in the Southwest U.S. corridor data.
Look for: faded road markings, collapsed cattle guards, and mile markers with replaced placards (the county replaces them more frequently at these points — that's your tell).
2. The Elevation Shelf
Any stretch where the highway drops or gains 200+ feet in elevation over less than 2 miles, AND there's a pull-off or rest area within line of sight. The combination of rapid elevation change plus a stopping point creates a documentation goldmine.
I've personally surveyed 47 elevation shelf zones across Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico. Hit rate: 73%.
3. The Service Gap
Stretches of 30+ miles between gas stations or services where cell coverage drops below 1 bar. Cross-reference USGS topographic data with carrier coverage maps. Where both converge on a stretch with historical incident reports — that's your zone.
