5 design mistakes that make your small business look amateur (and how to fix them in 10 min)

I've reviewed hundreds of small business brands — Instagram pages, websites, pitch decks. The same 5 mistakes show up every time:

1. Too many fonts. Pick 2. One for headlines, one for body text. That's it. Mixing 4-5 fonts screams "I made this in a rush."

2. Low-contrast text. If your audience has to squint, they'll scroll past. Light gray on white? Dark blue on black? Test it: zoom out to 50% — if you can't read it, fix it.

3. Inconsistent colors. Pick 3-4 brand colors and use them everywhere. Your Instagram, your website, your invoices. Consistency = trust.

4. Stock photos that feel generic. A handshake in front of a globe? Come on. Use lifestyle photos, behind-the-scenes shots, or stylized graphics instead.

5. Cluttered layouts. White space is your friend. Give every element room to breathe. The most expensive-looking designs are often the simplest.

Great design isn't about talent. It's about following a few rules consistently. That's exactly what I build at DesignDrop — ready-made templates with these rules baked in, so you don't have to think about it.
