What's actually stopping your first garment?

Most first collections stall in the same five places. Not talent. Not “a brand.” A missing decision.

Vote below, then reply with the garment you are stuck on: what it is, who it is for, and where it died.

I will answer the first replies with a next step you can do this week, even if you have not bought anything.

If you are further along, Designer Studio Pass is weekly sample development check-ins. If you want the full path from customer paragraph to a costed sample, the Handbook is on the Products tab.

Free excerpt: write a customer, not a vibe

Moodboards without a customer produce pretty sketches that nobody buys.

This is a free excerpt from The Clothing Designer Handbook. Use it before you buy anything, including this handbook.

Write one paragraph about a real person

Give them a name, a climate, a job, a budget, and three outfits they already wear.

Example:

Amina, 29, Lusaka. Works in an office that is cold in the morning and hot by noon. Buys two or three pieces a year that are not basics. Will spend $40 to $80 on a shirt if it survives sweat and still looks sharp in photos. Hates anything that needs dry cleaning.

That paragraph decides more than any Pinterest board:

  • Fiber: breathable, washable

  • Color: works in daylight and office light

  • Price ceiling

  • Care instructions

  • How “fashion” versus “useful” the piece can be

Do this exercise

  1. Name 3 people you could actually sell to this year

  2. Write their paragraph

  3. Pick one

  4. List 5 garments they already own

  5. List the gap: what they need that they cannot find locally at their price

Your first collection should fill that gap, not express your personality. Your personality can show up inside the gap.

If any line is blank, you are not ready to cut cloth.

The full handbook walks that same garment through sketching, a 4 to 6 piece collection, a basic tech pack, and costing. Get it from the Products tab.

Welcome to Quick Vault.

This is a practical handbook for people who want to design clothing they can actually make and sell, not just pin inspiration.

The Clothing Designer Handbook walks you through one garment from first sketch to a costed sample:

  • Write a real customer, not a vibe

  • Build a visual language you can reuse

  • Sketch garments as specs (flats, not fashion illustrations)

  • Plan a 4 to 6 piece first collection

  • Write a basic tech pack a maker can follow

  • Cost the piece so the price makes sense

13 lessons, printable workbook pages, and a PDF you can mark up next to your sketchbook.

You do not need a brand, a factory, or a logo to start. You need a pencil, a customer, and one piece you will finish.
