5 Settings That Fixed 90% of My Failed Prints

I've been designing for 3D printers for years, and I see the same mistakes over and over.


Here are 5 slicer settings that eliminated almost all my failed prints:


1. First layer height → 0.28mm (not 0.2). Gives better bed adhesion without sacrificing quality on the rest of the print.


2. Print speed for first layer → 20mm/s max. Most people leave this at 50+. Slow it down. Your first layer is everything.


3. Retraction distance → 6mm for Bowden, 1mm for direct drive. Wrong retraction = stringing nightmares.


4. Cooling fan → 0% first layer, 100% from layer 3. This alone fixes warping on PLA.


5. Z-offset micro-adjust. Even if your BLTouch says you're level, manually nudge it -0.02 to -0.05. Feel the first layer with your finger — it should be smooth, not rough.


These 5 changes took my success rate from ~70% to 95%+.
