The Blood Rite — Part One

Six women are buried in her garden. She is the seventh. Six days remain for her.

Maren wakes up in a Savannah hotel room with blood under her nails and three days missing from her memory. A man she does not know is asleep in the bed beside her. Her sister, who died ten years ago, is on her phone's lock screen. A fresh symbol has been carved into her hip while she slept.

She has six days.

The man's name is Caine. He says he is sorry. He says he can keep her alive if she lets him. He says there are six women buried in an orchard twelve miles west of the city, and the seventh stone in the ground is the one with her name on it.

She does not know yet if she should run from him or trust him.

By the third night she is in his bed. By the fifth night she has killed a man at his table. By the sixth night she is standing on the balcony of a house she did not choose, and her sister, who is supposed to be dead, is walking toward the door.
