Why most 'check engine light' repairs cost more than they should

Ran a shop for years and the #1 thing that costs customers extra money isn't the repair — it's skipping the diagnostic step.

Here's the pattern I see constantly: someone's check engine light comes on, they guess at the problem (or a shop guesses for them), they pay for a part that doesn't fix it, and now they're paying twice.

A proper computer diagnostic scan takes 20-30 minutes and tells you exactly what's wrong before you spend a dollar on parts or labor. It's the cheapest insurance policy in auto repair, and most people skip it because it feels like an 'extra fee' instead of what it actually is — the thing that prevents wasted repairs.

Same logic applies to brakes. Pads wearing down is obvious. What's NOT obvious without a proper inspection is whether your rotors need resurfacing or full replacement — and guessing wrong there means redoing the job in 3 months.

Moral of the story: diagnose first, repair second. Every time.

Started Moshi on this principle — book a diagnostic before any repair, no upsells, no guesswork. Happy to answer any car questions in the comments.
