The 3 diagnostic questions I ask before ever touching a wrench

Spent years fixing my own cars and the #1 mistake I see beginners make is jumping straight to replacing parts before actually diagnosing the problem. Before you buy anything, ask yourself:

1. When does it happen? Cold start, after driving 20 min, only on turns, only braking — timing narrows down the system fast (fuel/ignition vs. suspension vs. brakes).

2. Is it a sound, smell, feel, or light? A burning smell is almost never the same root cause as a grinding sound. Don't treat symptoms as interchangeable.

3. Did anything change recently? New parts, a recent repair, weather, terrain — most "random" problems have a trigger if you think back 1-2 weeks.

Running through these three before you touch anything saves you from the classic DIY trap: replacing the alternator when it was actually a bad ground wire the whole time.

Built an AI tool that walks through this exact diagnostic process step by step if anyone wants a faster way to work through it — check it out on our page.
