The photo that makes a pet portrait gift actually land

Most pet portrait gifts fail for one boring reason: the photo.

If you are buying this for someone else, do not wait for a studio shot. Steal a photo they already love. The one they use as a lock screen. The one they still have from three phones ago.

What to look for:

  • Eyes in focus. Everything else can be messy.

  • Face not cropped by a thumb, a couch, or another dog.

  • Light from a window beats a flash every time.

Skip the Halloween costume shot unless the costume is the joke. For birthday, holiday, and memorial gifts, you want the face they would recognize in the dark.

If you only have one decent photo, send that. One honest picture beats a folder of almosts.
