The 3 budget line items families always underestimate

I've spent a lot of time digging into family budgets, and the same three categories trip people up every single time:

1. Subscriptions. Not just streaming — think apps, cloud storage, meal kits, kids' apps. The average family has 8-12 recurring charges they've forgotten about. Do a bank statement audit once a quarter. You'll find $30-80/month hiding in plain sight.

2. "Small" grocery trips. The big weekly shop gets budgeted. The 3pm gas station run for milk doesn't. Those add up to more than people think — often 15-20% of total food spend.

3. Kids' activities and gear. Sports fees, recital costumes, birthday parties — these get paid one-off and never make it into the monthly budget category, so they feel like surprises every time, even though they're completely predictable if you track them.

The fix isn't complicated: track every dollar for one month, categorize ruthlessly, and you'll find 10-15% of your spend you didn't know was leaking. That's real money back in your pocket without cutting anything you actually care about.

I write about this stuff weekly over at Dollar Sense if you want more of this kind of breakdown.
