The 3 drinks that actually make you drink more

Most people think they drink too much because of willpower. They're wrong.

After talking to hundreds of people trying to cut back, I noticed a pattern — there are 3 specific drink types that consistently cause people to overshoot their limits:

1. "Just one glass of wine with dinner"

Wine glasses have gotten 7x bigger since the 1700s. A "standard pour" at home is usually 2-3 actual servings. You think you had one glass — you actually had three.

2. Cocktails with friends

Cocktails are social accelerators. They take 10 minutes to make, you sip them fast while talking, and ordering the next round is always someone else's idea. Two cocktails = 4-6 standard drinks depending on the bar.

3. The "I deserve it" beer

End of a hard day, you grab a cold one. Then another. This is the most dangerous pattern because it wires alcohol to your stress response. Over time, your brain literally needs it to decompress.

The fix isn't willpower. It's awareness.

Once you know your trigger drink, you can plan around it. Swap wine for a measured pour in a smaller glass. Set a 2-cocktail rule before you go out. Replace the stress beer with sparkling water + lime for the first 20 minutes.

Small changes. Massive results.

If this hits home, I built Drink Less to help people like you track patterns, get accountability, and build healthier habits with a community that gets it.
