Why your R1 is leaving 8-12HP on the table
Most 2019+ Yamaha R1 owners are running their bikes with the stock ECU map Yamaha designed to pass Euro5 emissions. That map runs lean at mid-range RPMs (around 14.7:1 AFR) and retards ignition timing by 2-3 degrees as a safety buffer.
The result? You're losing 8-12HP at the wheel that the engine is mechanically capable of making.
Here's what the fix looks like:
Fuel mixture: Stock targets stoichiometric 14.7:1 through the mid-range. For peak power on 98+ octane, you want 12.8-13.0:1 from 6,000-10,000 RPM and 12.5:1 above 10K. That alone is worth 5-6HP.
Ignition timing: Yamaha pulls 2-3° of timing in the upper RPM range as a detonation safety net. With proper fuel and a quality exhaust, you can safely advance 1.5-2° and pick up another 3-4HP.
Throttle mapping: The stock throttle-by-wire map has an aggressive dead zone below 15% throttle opening. Remapping this to a linear response transforms corner exit drive.
These are numbers pulled on the dyno across dozens of CP4 engines. The R1's crossplane crank is incredibly responsive to proper fueling.
