A Virtual EA is not a cheaper VA with Zoom
Most people who say they want a “virtual EA” are still buying a general virtual assistant: inbox filing, calendar Tetris, a bit of Canva. That work is useful. It is not executive support.
An executive hires someone who extends them. Gatekeeper, coordinator, advisor. You filter interruptions. You look two weeks ahead. You write emails that can be forwarded to a board member without anyone flinching. You know which decisions you may take and which you must escalate. You do this without the hallway — which means you build the hallway in writing.
The rate gap is not a mystery. Generalist VA work often sits around $15–25/hour because the unit of value is a completed task. Executive-level virtual support commonly commands $40–80/hour because the unit of value is judgment: protected time, fewer surprises, a CEO who can think.
If you are a VA trying to move upmarket, stop adding tools to your bio. Pick a niche an executive would recognise. Write like your email will be forwarded. Practise a real inbox under time pressure. That is the work. The rest is decoration.
