Most ecom brands leave 20-30% of revenue on the table. It's not ads. It's email.
I've looked at a lot of Shopify backends, and the pattern is always the same: founders pour everything into paid ads, get a sale, and then... nothing. No welcome sequence. No abandoned cart recovery. No post-purchase flow. The customer just disappears into a list that never gets emailed.
Here's the uncomfortable math: email marketing typically drives 25-30% of total revenue for ecom brands that actually run it properly. If you're at 0-5%, that's not a small gap — that's most of a second revenue channel sitting completely unused, and you already paid for the traffic to fill it.
The 3 flows that matter most, in order of setup priority:
Abandoned Cart — usually the single highest-converting flow you can build. People already showed intent. A well-timed 3-email sequence (1hr, 24hr, 72hr) recovers a meaningful chunk of "lost" sales for free.
Welcome Series — new subscribers are at peak interest the moment they sign up. This is where you turn a discount-seeker into a repeat customer, not just a one-time coupon user.
Post-Purchase / Win-back — the cheapest revenue you'll ever generate is from someone who already bought. Most brands never ask for the second sale.
None of this requires a big list. It requires flows that actually exist. If you're running ads with zero email infrastructure behind them, you're paying full price to acquire customers you're guaranteed to under-monetize.
Building this out properly (with real examples, not just theory) is what I do — happy to answer questions here if anyone's stuck on their own setup.
