Why 90% of TikTok edits look flat (and it's not your footage)

Been editing short-form for a while now, and the #1 mistake I see isn't camera quality or hooks — it's color and pacing.

Most people shoot on their phone, slap a trending sound on it, and wonder why it doesn't feel as 'expensive' as the accounts they're trying to compete with. Here's the actual gap:

1. Flat color = amateur color. Straight-out-of-camera footage almost always looks washed out. A single consistent LUT across your whole page does more for your "aesthetic" than any camera upgrade will.

2. Transitions are doing too much or too little. Either it's a jarring hard cut with zero rhythm, or someone went overboard with 15 different zoom/glitch effects in a 20-second clip. The best edits use 2-3 transition types max, consistently, so the viewer's brain doesn't have to reset every cut.

3. Pacing follows the audio, not the story. Cut on the beat. Every single time. If you're not cutting your B-roll and text overlays to hit right on the snare or the bass drop, you're leaving retention on the table.

None of this requires being a Premiere/CapCut wizard — it requires having the right building blocks (presets, LUTs, transition packs) dialed in once, then reusing them consistently so your page has a signature look.

That's literally why I built Edit Vault — a monthly-updated library of the presets/LUTs/transitions I use, plus a place to get real feedback on your cuts. Not going to spam the link here, but if you want to see it, it's on my profile.
