The one editing habit that separates amateur cuts from pro cuts

Spent years editing before I realized most "bad" edits aren't bad because of color or transitions — they're bad because every cut lines up perfectly with both the audio AND the video at the same frame.

That's the tell. Real pro edits almost never do that.

J-cuts and L-cuts (where the audio from the next/previous clip bleeds across the cut point) are the single highest-leverage technique you can learn. They're free, they take 10 minutes to learn, and they instantly make interviews, talking-head content, and vlogs feel smoother — because your brain processes sound and picture separately, and a hard sync cut on both feels jarring even if you can't say why.

Try this on your next edit: on every dialogue cut, drag the audio 3-5 frames before or after the video cut. That's it. You'll immediately notice the difference.

I packaged this and the rest of my editing workflow (pacing, color, sound, export settings) into a straight-to-the-point guide if anyone wants the full breakdown — no 40-hour course, just what actually matters.
