The 3 things every beginner dancer gets wrong (and how to fix them)
I've taught hundreds of first-time dancers. Everyone — regardless of age, gender, or "natural talent" — makes the same three mistakes.
1. Looking at your feet.
Your body follows your eyes. When you stare down, your posture collapses and your balance goes with it. Fix: pick a spot across the room at eye level. Trust your feet — they know where the floor is.
2. Holding your breath.
Sounds silly, but most beginners tense up and literally stop breathing mid-step. Your muscles lock, your timing drifts, and you feel exhausted after 30 seconds. Fix: breathe out on every weight change. Movement flows from the exhale.
3. Trying to be perfect instead of being present.
Dance isn't about executing steps correctly. It's about feeling the music and responding to it. The fastest learners are the ones who let themselves look awkward for a while.
If you've been thinking about learning to dance but feel like you're "too old" or "have two left feet" — that's exactly who this is for. Everyone starts somewhere.
