3 Things D1 Coaches Actually Look For (That Most High Schoolers Ignore)

Every high school player thinks they need a higher scoring average to get recruited. That's maybe 20% of it.

Here's what D1 coaches are actually evaluating when they watch your film:

1. How you move without the ball.

Most players stand around when they don't have it. Coaches want to see cutting, screening, relocating. If you're not moving, you're invisible.

2. Defensive positioning, not just athleticism.

Sure, a chase-down block looks sick. But coaches care about whether you're in the right spot BEFORE the play happens. Help-side positioning, closeouts, communication — that's what separates varsity from D1.

3. How you respond to adversity.

Miss a shot? Turn the ball over? Coaches are watching what happens next. Do you get back on defense or do you hang your head? Mental toughness is non-negotiable at the next level.

The skill gap between a good high school player and a D1 recruit is smaller than you think — but it's in the details most players never train.

That's exactly what we break down inside Elevate Coaching Collective.
