3 things most youth basketball coaches get wrong (and how to fix them)
After coaching youth basketball for years, the same mistakes keep holding young athletes back.
1. Overloading drills before basics are solid
Most coaches jump to complex plays before kids have consistent ball-handling. If a player can't dribble with their weak hand comfortably, no play will save them in a real game. Lock in fundamentals first — every single session.
2. Ignoring the mental side
The physical game is only half of it. Young athletes need to learn how to handle mistakes mid-game, how to communicate with teammates, and how to stay locked in under pressure. This is 100% coachable. Most coaches skip it entirely.
3. Training in isolation
Solo drills build skill. But if players never practice against real defenders in real scenarios, they freeze in games. Scrimmage time is sacred — never cut it short.
This is exactly what we focus on at EliteCoach. We work with youth athletes aged 8–18 to build the full game: skills, mindset, and competitive awareness.
