What judges actually look for in a science competition project (from someone who's read hundreds of them)

Every year we read hundreds of submissions for AISPC, and the projects that place well almost always share the same traits — regardless of topic or budget.


1. A real question, not just a real experiment.

The best projects start with "I wonder why..." not "I need a project for the fair." Judges can tell the difference immediately. Pick something you're actually curious about, even if it seems small.


2. Evidence you understand your own data.

You don't need perfect results. You need to be able to explain why your results look the way they do — including anomalies. A student who says "this outlier is probably because of X, and here's how I'd test that" scores higher than one with a flawless-looking graph they can't explain.


3. Awareness of prior work.

Cite 2-3 existing studies related to your topic and explain how your project builds on or differs from them. This alone puts you ahead of most entrants — it shows you're doing science, not just a school project.


4. A clear "so what."

End your write-up or presentation with why it matters — to your school, your community, or the field. This is the single most skipped step, and it's often the difference between a good project and a winning one.


5. Honesty about limitations.

Every project has flaws — small sample size, limited equipment, time constraints. Naming them yourself (with a fix you'd try next) reads as scientific maturity, not weakness.


If you're a first-time entrant working solo or with a small team, don't be intimidated — some of our strongest past submissions came from students working with nothing but a laptop and a school lab. It's the thinking that wins, not the budget.
