5 Etsy listing mistakes that kill your sales (and how to fix them)

I've reviewed hundreds of Etsy shops, and the same mistakes keep showing up. Here's what's costing you sales:

1. Your first photo is zoomed out too far

Etsy search results are tiny thumbnails. If your product doesn't fill 80%+ of the frame, buyers scroll right past. Crop tight, clean background, product front and center.

2. You're stuffing keywords into your title

Etsy's algorithm reads your title, but so do humans. "Handmade Ceramic Mug Blue Coffee Cup Gift for Her Birthday Present Pottery" reads like spam. Lead with what it IS, then add 2-3 relevant search terms naturally.

3. Your descriptions start with your brand story

Buyers don't care about your journey — yet. Open with what the product does for THEM. Dimensions, materials, what makes it worth the price. Save the story for the bottom.

4. You only have 5 listings

More listings = more chances to appear in search. Aim for 30+ active listings. If you sell mugs, list every color variation separately. Each one is a new entry point.

5. Your pricing doesn't account for Etsy fees

Etsy takes ~12-15% between listing fees, transaction fees, and payment processing. If you're pricing based on materials + time alone, you're losing money on every sale.

I built ShopCraft to help new sellers avoid exactly these mistakes — listing templates, SEO guides, and pricing tools all in one place.
