Why 90% of new Etsy listings never get seen (and how to fix it in 10 minutes)
I've optimized hundreds of Etsy listings and the same pattern shows up every time.
New sellers write titles like: "Cute handmade earrings for women gift idea"
The algorithm doesn't care that they're cute. It cares about specificity.
Here's what actually works:
1. Front-load your primary keyword. Etsy weighs the first few words of your title the heaviest. If you sell sterling silver earrings, "Sterling Silver Hoop Earrings" needs to come before "Gift for Her."
2. Use all 13 tags — and make them different from your title. Your tags should cover variations your title can't. Think materials, occasions, styles, and synonyms. "Minimalist jewelry" in tags + "Sterling Silver Studs" in title = double the search coverage.
3. Descriptions matter more than you think. Etsy now indexes your first ~40 words for search. Don't waste them on "Thanks for visiting my shop!" Start with what the product IS and who it's for.
4. Let AI do the heavy lifting. Tools like ChatGPT can generate keyword variations, analyze competitor listings, and suggest tags you'd never think of. The sellers who are winning right now are using AI — the ones who aren't are falling behind.
Most sellers spend hours making beautiful products and 5 minutes on their listing copy. Flip that ratio and watch what happens.
