The 3 things that make or break any event (and most planners get wrong)

I've spent years planning events — from small rooftop dinners to full-blown multi-day experiences. And every single time something flopped, it came down to one of these three things:

1. The first 15 minutes set the tone for everything.

Most hosts obsess over the main event and completely ignore the arrival experience. If someone walks in and doesn't know where to go, who to talk to, or what's happening — you've already lost them. We design "landing moments" that immediately pull people in. Music, lighting, a welcome ritual — something that says "you're in the right place."

2. Strangers don't mix on their own. Ever.

The #1 complaint at events? "I didn't know anyone." You can't just throw 50 people in a room and hope for the best. We build structured icebreakers into every experience — not the cringey corporate kind, but genuine connection moments that feel natural. Think: shared challenges, curated seating, conversation prompts baked into the environment.

3. The aftertaste matters more than the event itself.

What people remember isn't the DJ or the venue — it's how they felt when they left. We obsess over the last 30 minutes: the send-off, the follow-up, the photo recap that hits their inbox the next morning. That's what turns a one-time attendee into someone who brings 3 friends next time.

If you're planning any kind of gathering — a brand activation, a dinner party, a community meetup — steal these principles. They work at every scale.

And if you want access to our full event playbooks, behind-the-scenes breakdowns, and a community of people who take this stuff seriously — check out what we're building at Spark & Revel. 🎇
