5 mistakes that tank your Express Entry score (and how to fix them)
I've helped dozens of skilled workers from Latin America navigate Canada's Express Entry system. These are the 5 most common mistakes I see — and they're all fixable.
1. Not getting your ECA done early enough
Educational Credential Assessments take 4-8 weeks. Most people wait until they're "ready to apply" and then panic. Start this NOW.
2. Ignoring Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)
Express Entry isn't just about your CRS score. A PNP nomination adds 600 points — that's basically a guaranteed invite. Research which provinces align with your occupation.
3. Underselling your work experience
Your NOC code matters more than your job title. A "Marketing Coordinator" might qualify under a higher-skilled NOC than they think. Get the classification right.
4. Skipping the language test retake
Even 1 point higher on your IELTS/CELPIP can bump your CRS by 20-30 points. Most people can improve their score with 2-3 weeks of focused prep.
5. Not having a backup plan for proof of funds
Canada requires proof of settlement funds in your account for at least 3 months. If your money is locked in investments or business accounts, start moving it NOW.
The Express Entry system rewards preparation. The people who get invited aren't luckier — they're just more organized.
I built The Migration Lab to give skilled workers from Latin America everything they need in one place: step-by-step guides, document templates, and a community of people going through the same process.
If you're serious about making the move, the blueprint is ready for you.
