The 8 things families actually forget on their first overnight
Most first family campouts fail for boring reasons. Not weather. Not the tent. The small stuff nobody puts on the Instagram list.
Here's what I see parents scramble for after dark:
A dedicated kid headlamp. Sharing one flashlight with two kids is how you lose a shoe.
A second lighter. The first one is always in a wet pocket.
A cheap foam pad under the sleeping bag. Ground cold hits kids faster than adults.
A bin for wet clothes. One damp hoodie ruins the whole car ride home.
Hot water in a thermos before you leave. Night cocoa without a 20-minute boil is a different trip.
Earplugs for the parents. Kids sleep. Forest noise doesn't.
Duct tape. Broken pole, ripped mesh, leaking bottle.
A written packing list on paper. Phones die. Paper doesn't.
Do a backyard setup the weekend before. Twenty minutes. You'll find every gap while you can still drive to a store.
That's the bar. Not more gear. The right gear, packed once.
