The 5-Question World-Building Stress Test (Free Framework)
Most fictional worlds fall apart not because they lack imagination, but because they lack internal consistency. Here's a quick framework you can run on any world — whether you're writing a novel, designing a game, or building a campaign setting.
The 5-Question Stress Test
Before you write another page, ask your world these five questions:
1. "What does an ordinary person eat for breakfast?"
This isn't trivial. It forces you to define agriculture, trade, climate, and culture in a single concrete detail. If you can't answer it, your world exists only at the epic scale — and that's where readers stop believing.
2. "How long does it take to send a message from one end of the map to the other?"
Information speed defines political structure. Empires can't exist without communication infrastructure. If your king knows about a border invasion instantly but has no magical communication network, your political system has a plot hole.
3. "What happens when someone breaks the law in a small village vs. a capital city?"
Justice systems reveal power structures, cultural values, and class dynamics. If the answer is the same in both places, your world isn't differentiated enough.
4. "If your magic system exists, why hasn't it replaced conventional technology?"
Every magic system needs constraints. Healing magic without limits means no hospitals. Teleportation without cost means no trade routes. The limitations are more important than the powers.
5. "What do people argue about?"
Not wars — arguments. Dinner table disagreements. Pub debates. The mundane conflicts reveal what a culture actually values, fears, and aspires to. If everyone in your world agrees on everything, it's a theme park, not a civilization.
How to Use This
Run these five questions on your current project. Write a one-paragraph answer for each. If any answer makes you pause — congratulations, you just found the weak point in your world-building.
That's the foundation of what we teach in depth at Worldforge Academy. If you want the complete framework — geography, history, magic systems, cultures, economics, technology, ecology, and a guided final project — the full course is available now.
Build worlds readers never want to leave.
