The 10 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before My Baby Was Born

I've worked with hundreds of new parents, and these are the 10 things that come up every single time — the stuff nobody warns you about.

1. The First Night Home Is the Hardest Night of Your Life

Everyone talks about labor. Nobody talks about the first night home when it's just you, a tiny human, and zero nurses to call. It gets easier after that. I promise.

2. Babies Don't Need Silence to Sleep

You spent 9 months with a heartbeat, whooshing blood, and muffled voices surrounding them. Complete silence is actually weird to a newborn. White noise machines exist for a reason.

3. "Sleep When the Baby Sleeps" Is Only Half Right

Yes, rest is critical. But also: eat when the baby sleeps, shower when the baby sleeps, stare at a wall when the baby sleeps. Whatever YOU need.

4. You Will Google Something at 3 AM and Terrify Yourself

Every parent does this. Before you spiral — if your baby is breathing, eating, and having wet diapers, you're almost certainly fine. Call your pediatrician in the morning, not Dr. Google.

5. Breastfeeding Is Natural, But It's Not Automatically Easy

It can take weeks to get right. It can hurt at first. Some parents can't do it at all. Fed is best. Period. Ask for help from a lactation consultant — they're game-changers.

6. Your Relationship Will Be Tested

Sleep deprivation + new responsibilities + hormonal changes = tension. This is normal. Communicate more than you think you need to. Give each other grace.

7. Milestones Are Ranges, Not Deadlines

Your friend's baby walked at 9 months. Yours is 14 months and still cruising. Both are normal. Development is not a race, and comparison is the thief of joy in parenting.

8. You Will Mourn Your Old Life (And That's Okay)

Missing spontaneous dinners or sleeping in doesn't mean you don't love your child. It means you're human. The new life gets its own kind of magic — it just takes time to see it.

9. Toddler Tantrums Are Communication, Not Manipulation

A 2-year-old screaming in the grocery store isn't trying to ruin your day. Their brain literally cannot regulate emotions yet. Stay calm, get low, and ride the wave.

10. You're Doing Better Than You Think

The fact that you're reading parenting advice, worrying about whether you're doing enough, and trying to learn — that IS being a good parent.
