Why most beginners quit learning Korean in the first 2 weeks (and how to not be one of them)

I've taught dozens of complete beginners 1-on-1, and the pattern is always the same: people burn out trying to memorize Hangeul from an app in one sitting, get overwhelmed by grammar particles (이/가, 은/는) way too early, and quit before they ever say a full sentence out loud.

Here's what actually works for absolute beginners:

1. Hangeul first, slowly. It's genuinely one of the most logical writing systems in the world — you can learn to read it in a few days if you focus only on that, not vocab, not grammar. Rushing this is the #1 reason people plateau.

2. Speak before you're 'ready.' Most learners wait until they feel confident to speak. Backwards — confidence comes from speaking badly first. Even 2 minutes of clumsy conversation per session beats an hour of silent flashcards.

3. Correction > memorization. Apps can't tell you why your sentence sounds off. A real correction, live, in the moment you make the mistake, sticks 10x better than a rule you read in a textbook.

This is exactly why I started doing 1-on-1 live coaching instead of just posting content — beginners need a human catching their mistakes in real time, not another app streak to maintain.

If you're starting from zero and want that kind of guidance, I'm running weekly 1-on-1 sessions at First Steps Korean. Happy to answer questions here too if you're stuck on where to start. 화이팅!
